8-Day Travel Adventure

 

Spend 4 days at each of any two of our three adventure outfitters' locations:

 

Oliver Lake Wilderness Camp

Four Day Travel Schedule

 

Day 1: Start in Saskatoon

Fly from Saskatoon to La Ronge (weekday flights: 8:00 a.m.).

Outfitter will arrange for airport pick-up and transportation to

Oliver Lake Wilderness Lodge via a 45 minute float plane flight across this vast wilderness of lakes and trees.

 

Arrive at Oliver Lake for lunch. Early afternoon departure by boat to rock cliffs overlooking Oliver Lake. Hike to the native trappers cabin and abandoned native fishing camp. Relax swimming and sunning on sandy beaches, hike through the forest, or take a boat ride around the myriad of islands on Oliver Lake. Return to camp by 5:00 p.m.

First rate food is prepared fresh daily including homemade bread and desserts.

Participate in a range of evening activities.

 

Day 2: White-water Rafting

 

Departure by boat to white-water rapids on the Grayling River. Raft down-river on level 2 rapids. Afternoon catch and release fishing for Arctic grayling and northern pike (Optional). Lots of opportunity for photography and possibly encountering big game including moose and black bear.

 

Day 3: Explore Cameron Falls

 

Departure by boat to Cameron Falls for canoeing, photography excursion and optional catch and release fishing. Raptor and waterfowl species, beaver, muskrat and otter are found here in their natural environment. Canoe from the falls to the Oliver narrows for lunch. Return to camp for supper meal and evening activities.

 

Day 4:Early morning hiking, fishing (optional) and canoeing within easy range of camp. Leave Oliver Lake for La Ronge and a late afternoon flight back to Saskatoon.

 

Includes:Return trip float plane, accommodation, meals, boat, motor, gas, guide, all excursions and taxes.

Does not include:Saskatoon-La Ronge return airfare.

This is an outdoor wilderness adventure package and activities may vary in the event of severe weather.

Sawyer Lake Adventures

Four day travel schedule

 

Day 1: Hiking

 

We will arrange for a 9 a.m. hotel pickup and transportation to Preeceville. Arrive at Sawyer Lake Adventures for lunch at approximately 1:00 p.m.

Afternoon hiking excursion through the boreal forest. This area is internationally recognized for its diverse bird and plant species including redtail hawks, bald eagles, loons, great grey owls, pitcher plants, Indian pipe and many edible plants, especially berries. Return to camp for home-cooked meals and relaxation.

 

Day 2: Canoeing through Cree territory

 

Full day canoe trip navigating miles of backcountry waterways. Explore Cree Aboriginal hunting and fishing grounds around Lake Nikik and Lake Wachusk. Total freedom to discover the plant, animal and bird species of the surrounding forest. Witness the quiet exhilaration of watching wildlife in a natural pristine habitat.

 

Day 3 (optional day): Fort Livingston and Fort Pelly

 

Spend the day exploring the site of Canada's first territorial government at Fort Livingstone, and the original home of Canada's Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Easy driving distance to Fort Pelly, site of an eighteenth century Hudson Bay fur trading post. An unbelievable amount of very significant Canadian history so close by. Plan to visit with local crafts people, do some shopping and have dinner in a small-town restaurant with home cooked meals.

 

Day 4: The boreal forest

 

Guided backpacking through the Porcupine Provincial Forest and wetlands surrounding Sawyer Lake. Hike game trails of moose, bear, elk (wapiti) and white-tail deer. Viewing and interpreting of a "working" sustainable horse-logging operation is a bonus feature! Return to camp for a peaceful evening of campfire conversation and local folklore.

 

Day 5:Local hiking

 

Greet the morning with breakfast on the veranda. Take in a refreshing hike or canoe trip around Sawyer Lake. Return to the city or to the next location, after lunch.

Otter Basin Outfitters

Four day travel schedule

 

Day 1: Saskatoon/Regina to Mankota: Outfitter will arrange 8:00 a.m. hotel pick-up and transportation to Gillespie Ranching Co: approximately 5 hours.

 

Arrive in time for lunch and a mid-day gathering with the outfitter and the crew. Travel by saddle horse through the Frenchman Valley and the spectacular vistas of the northern Missouri Breaks.

 

The West Block holdings of the Grassland National Park contain over 64,000 acres of unique mixed-grass prairie and a number of rare and uncommon wildlife and raptor species. This is a designated wilderness area and is the only protected semi-arid rangeland in Canada.

 

Day 2: The grasslands, birds and wildlife

 

Explore the range and diversity of the Grasslands landscape. View prairie dog towns and maybe catch an uncommon glimpse of the swift fox; prime habitat for raptor species including eagles, ferringous and Swainson hawks. Unique and exquisite wildflower and grass species abound especially during mid-spring season. Dinosaur and fossil remains from 65 million years stand as witness to this unique environment.

 

Day 3: Plains Indian culture and heritage

 

Journey through the Frenchman River Badlands and view an unequalled display of Plains Indian archeology. Over 4,000 sites remain in this protected wilderness expanse including burial grounds, ceremonial sites, buffalo drive lanes and teepee rings.

 

Day 4: The Medicine Line

 

Ride the Frenchman River Hills and make the trek from the backcountry to the main ranch. The push home includes a stop east of the Frenchman River where Sitting Bull crossed the Medicine Line with the Lakota Sioux on his run from the U.S. cavalry.

 

Outfitter will arrange for transportation back to the airport.

Travel Arrangements

 

Fly to Saskatoon/Regina from all major U.S and Canadian cities. Fly to LaRonge on Transwest Air. A taxi will pick you up at the LaRonge airport and transport you to the float plane base in Missinipe. We can help you make the best arrangements.

 

For guests driving into Saskatchewan we will also assist you in renting a vehicle. As an option you can be chauffeured from Saskatoon if you choose. Please contact us beforehand for the best rates available.

 

For travel between outfitter locations, all arrangements will be made by Cowboy and Canoe Wilderness Adventure Outfitters.
